Colbert, aliens and the Vatican

Did you see the Vatican astronomer last night on Colbert Report talking about the search for extraterrestrial life?

Jesuit Brother Guy Consolmagno did a great job, in what could have been a tough forum, explaining the Church's views on the possibility of finding life elsewhere in the universe.

And he also plugged his latest book, "Heavens Proclaim: The Vatican and Astronomy" (OSV, $39.95), which was published in English by Our Sunday Visitor.

Check it out.

A very brave move indeed. I think the church was clever to enter this unique forum in order to speak to such a unique topic. The youthful audience of the show were no doubt intrigued by the subject matter.

As far as PR goes, the Vatican gets a point.

Christians were the first ones to the new world, and Catholic missionaries gave many American cities their names and traditions. Christians should not fear the great beyond, it is just more opportunity to spread the Good News.
