Six words or less, plus Hitchens

The online edition of The Washington Post in its runup to the papal visit invites readers to define faith in six words or less. Definitions ranged from "Knowing that He will answer prayers" to "Belief and trust ignoring educated intellect." But this is reinventing the wheel. The letter to the Hebrews (11:1) manages to define faith in just six words, and I'll stick with them: "...the substance of things hoped for."

The online Post also regales readers with a pre-visit rant by atheist journalist Christopher Hitchens targeted at Pope Benedict and Cardinal Bernard Law. At last count, the number of responses, both pro- and anti-Hitchens, was well over two hundred and headed up.
