A first: Pope's video message to Americans

The Vatican announced today that a video message of Pope Benedict XVI to "the American people on the eve of his visit" to the United States will be released tomorrow (at about 5:30 a.m. Eastern time) during a Vatican press briefing.

There are no details of how the video will be distributed, but it'd be crazy not to post it to the Internet.

This is an unprecedented component of a pope's preparation for an apostolic voyage to the United States (According to a CNS blog report, the Vatican spokesman says John Paul II recorded videos before several papal trips). It's likely he'll outline a couple of the main theme's he expects to return through during his week here. And it's a interesting example of Church use of new media. Any bets on the number of youtube views his video would get?

Stay tuned.
